William Duane Peverill RM1

Duane was born 19 January 1948 in Fresno, California, and was raised in Oakhurst, Avenal and Fresno.

Attended Bullard High School and graduated in 1966. During high school he played football, wrestling and diving.

After graduating high school he joined the U.S. Navy and attended Boot Camp at San Diego, California. Upon completion of Boot Camp he attended Basic Electricity and Electronics School and then on to Radioman A School.  His first duty station was NavComsta, Subic Bay, Philippines. After two years there he volunteered for Operation Deep Freeze  Winter Over 1970 in Antarctica. At McMurdo Sound, he ran the amateur radio station KC4USV/N0ICE which allowed personnel to communicate with their loved ones. Since there was no internet at that time and duty was total isolation, he was able to maintain contact through the radio. After discharge from the Navy he was called up by the reserves and ask to join which he spent the next 17 years. During that time he served on the USS Fresno,USS Marvin Shields and USS Bradley FF 1041.  He had the pleasure of going to Hawaii, Guest Ship at Portland Rose Festival and guest ship in New Westminster, Canada. He enjoyed his time in the US Navy and would do it all again.

As a civilian Radioman Peverill got married and had two great daughters Dawn and Julie . One is a Confidential Secretary at a school and the other is Health Care worker in Oregon. He attended Fresno State where he received a BA and teaching credential. Duane got a job at Central Unified School District in Fresno where he taught for 33 years.  He taught Industrial Arts, Math, Computers and created a Video Production program. With the help of the custodian he wired the entire school El Capitan Middle School with CAT5 so every classroom would have a computer with internet access. During the time teaching he was President of the Central Teachers Association. Upon retiring he ran for the Central Unified School Boards where he spent four years and one year as President. He met his wife Patricia who trained Thorough Bred race horses and have been married for over 40 years.
